Book Review: The Width of the World by David Baldacci

Title: The Width of the World
Author: David Baldacci
Publisher: Pan Macmillan

Review

Vega Jane is a teenage Wug and until recently was a resident of Wormwood village. Her entire life was shaped by two facts — a) nothing exists outside the grim village of Wormwood, and b) there’s no way to cross the monster-filled Quag. However, these facts are nothing but lies. And once she learns this truth, her life changes for ever. Along with her friend Delph, she breaks out of Wormwood and makes it through the deadly Quag alive only to find a wall. The key to the world on the other side is a ring that once belonged to her grandfather. When the duo reach the village, they are in for more surprises.
For the first time, they find themselves among people who aren’t governed by fear. But Vega Jane starts to suspect that this new world might be even more dangerous than the treacherous place they have left behind. She confronts the Maladons — malign magicians who have ruled everywhere else for eight centuries over a populace brainwashed into mindless contentment. The cheerful citizens have paid a high price for their comfort; they’ve been enslaved and don’t even realize it. To set the innocent people free from the clutches of the evil Maladons, she recruits and trains a small army of magicians to fight back while effecting rescues and eluding multiple ambushes with help from a ring of invisibility and different spells.
The thing about a book series is that you can’t just pick out any book in random and expect to understand everything that is going on. This is what happened with me. Without being initiated into the dystopian world that David Baldacci has erected with meticulous details over the last two books already, I just dived in headfirst and found myself floundering. It took me a while to get to know the back story, but once I did, things became easier.
Baldacci’s writing style is easy to comprehend and makes for a quick read. The book is aimed for a younger audience and comes with illustrations. With a style similar to that of the Harry Potter series, Baldacci has created an entire universe filled with creatures and characters unique to his dystopian world. He surely knows how to spin a tale and make the unbelievable realistic. Hooked readers will be tapping their fingers waiting for the sequel.

Book Review: Dangerous Games by Danielle Steel

Title: Dangerous Games
Author: Danielle Steel
Publisher: Pan Macmillan

Review

In Danielle Steel’s latest release, she explores the nuances, manipulations and extortion of politics.
The story begins with a sneak peek into the dangerous lives of renowned television correspondent Alix Philips and her cameraman Ben Chapman, who is an ex-Navy officer. Alix is a reporter extraordinaire who is at the frontline almost always, covering pieces ranging in variety. She is passionate about her work and gets into grave situations in search of truth and then reporting it back. The real story begins when Alix and Ben land into an assignment to investigate allegations against the Vice President of United States, Tony Clark. As she digs into the case, she uncovers a domestic political scandal of epic proportions. Working with the intelligence community, she interviews the reclusive Olympia Foster, the widow of the beloved U.S. senator who was gunned down by an unknown assailant. This investigative journalism forms the crux of the book and dominates the scene with a sub-plot about Faye, Alix’s 19-year-old daughter, who wants to pursue higher education.
Steel writes a taut, compelling thriller with believable characters, a smart heroine, and a plot that keeps readers engaged while keeping the door open for a sequel. The narrative is absorbing and free flowing with a smooth pace. However, the book doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Certain elements in the book seem sudden and hence come across as forced. Then there’s repetition of sentences throughout the narrative that could have been avoided.
As a teenager, I was a die-hard fan of the author. She wrote some of the most beautiful romances that the literary world has produced. For me, she was the queen of that genre. ‘Dangerous Games’ is a deviation from that genre and somewhere along the lines, I felt that the author’s usual flair for heart-tugging emotion is missing in this book. This is definitely not one of her best works. I was expecting her old charm but was somewhat disappointed. Perhaps it was because I kept comparing this book to all her previous fabulous works.
Overall, Steel still knows how to tell a story beautifully. Dangerous Games will win her new readers.

Excerpt:

“We caught a Beast! A real live poxy Beast!”
Bastards. Calling us beasts while they cheat, steal, and lie. I got kicked in the ribs, a whip laid about my shoulders, and all the time they were screaming.
“Hang him!”
“Beat him!”
“Kill the Beast!”
Then I saw her. She was standing there, staring right into my eyes. For a moment, I thought I was looking at a Valkyrie, one of Valhalla’s shield maidens. She had hair the colour of ice, and eyes as blue as the sky. Tall, willowy, and silent, she looked unworldly. There was a wolf at her side, too.
I blinked, expecting her to vanish, but it wasn’t a vision. She was real. The knowledge hit me with a punch that sucked the breath out of me. She was one of us, a Skraeling of Thule.
She leaned on the wolf, controlling it with a touch of her hand. “Lady Freyja always advises counsel before action.”
A Skraeling woman who invoked our goddess yet who was a traitor. I was filled with sudden hate, poisoned by the thought of one of our own people contaminated by foul betrayal.
If the will were a weapon, she would have fallen on the spot. Instead, the world blurred again. I think I passed out for a few moments because when I opened my eyes, he was there. The Patriarch. A cheat, a liar and all-round scum bucket
He certainly hates us Skraeling. “Glorious Ullr will bring us wise counsel. And tomorrow we will flog the Beast to cleanse him of his sins, and then we will burn him alive!”

He’s a vicious Beast, violent and dangerous. Bliss knows she ought to walk away. After all, she has a dark and dangerous secret to preserve. When she can’t leave him to burn, her rescue tumbles them both into danger, adventure and romance.

Book Review: Kissing The Demon by Amrita Kumar

Title: Kissing The Demon
Author: Amrita Kumar
Publisher: Harper Collins India

Review

What got things going for me while reading the initial pages of ‘Kissing the Demon’ was Amrita Kumar’s verdict: “…. writers are born and made, that talent can be innate and developed.” What I inferred from this is that one can polish one’s craft and hone the skills to go on to become a good writer. It sat well with the aspiring author within me.
A longtime writing teacher/mentor, Amrita shares her approach to developing creative writing skills in ‘Kissing the Demon.’ She has infused all her creative interests into this work. If you are planning to write a book then you should most certainly grab this one to channelize your literary prowess better and in an orderly fashion.
This book has five chapters. Each chapter breaks into subsections tackling smaller topics, with many examples and checklists to keep the information organized and to aid the readers understand better the workings of that which goes into developing a quality work. It helps to navigate the maze of plot construction, narrative viewpoint, character development, dialogue creation, and description.
This book is an effective — and affecting — first read to call forth the writer’s voice. There are several books out in the market with related material. What sets this book apart from the milieu is that it specifically targets the Indian scenario. While Amrita’s approach has plenty of New-Age flavor, it’s also her pedagogical belief which helps one learn to write through a process of observing experiences and then expressing the same in the written form. Through this book, she has attempted to break the process of writing down into as replicable a craft as possible.
All aspiring scribblers, who want to quickly absorb the fundamentals of writing and getting published, will find ‘Kissing the Demon’ to be a concise manual. An orderly, no-frills guide to the craft of fiction as well as non-fiction writing — a must have for all those out there dreaming to be successful writers.

Guest Post: Why Book Covers are So Important by Veronica Thatcher

Guest Post

Why Book Covers are So Important by Veronica Thatcher

Book covers. A common mistake that most orthodox-minded writers make is that they don’t pay attention to the book cover. After all, there is an age-old maxim about it. “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” So, writers think, who in hell cares for the cover?

Rookie mistake. In today’s modern world, no one follows maxims. If they did, life would be much, much simpler. Everyone, in fact, does the very opposite. They do judge a book by its cover. And why shouldn’t they?

Let’s face it, book covers are like first impressions. The cover is the first thing you see when you pick up a book. You read the back matter – the synopsis and author biography much later. Just like first impressions are the most important, so are book covers. If you fail to make a compelling first impression, whatever chance you did have is down the drain.

While picking out the cover of my debut novel, A Way Back Into Love, I was over-obsessed with finding the perfect cover for my book. I spent all day and all night, every day, on stock image websites like Shutterstock and Adobe Stock. I was driving myself, my mother and my project manager so crazy that my mother finally gave up and said it. “Why do you care so much about the cover? The book is what matters the most! People are gonna be reading the book or gawking at your cover all day long?”

Oh, Ma! If only you knew. As I said, orthodox-minded people from the 90s who have this stereotypical notion that no one judges a book by its cover and that if a book is good, it will sell even if the author sits inside the four walls of his/her room all day and does nothing to market it, will never understand that the cover of a book is one of the most important marketing tools a author has.

Covers have the ability to speak to the eyes that behold them. It can draw a reader in instantly, or repel the reader to such extent that the reader will not bother to flip your book and read the back matter despite the fact that your book is the next Pride and Prejudice.
An attractive cover is like flirting. It captures the attention of the reader and forces him/her to flip the book. Covers also represent the content of the book. It gives the reader a taste of what is to come.

A risqué cover often represents an erotic romance. A sweet cover in pink could represent teen fiction. A dark cover with solid colours could represent dark romances, forbidden subjects, serious issues, paranormal fiction or a murder mystery/psychological thriller.
After a lot of humming and hawing, a lot of back and forth, I finally chose a cover for my debut novel that I thought represented its theme. I was not overly satisfied with the cover due to my cover designer’s reluctance to add filters to it, and the cover may go under serious editing post release, but it’s OK for now.

What I see a lot these days is that most of the romance novels out there, whether self-published or traditionally published, have a racy cover or a guy’s chiselled chest on the front, even though the content of the book might be suitable for teens. I don’t understand this trend. There are a lot of graphics that can represent romance and still fall in the PG-13 rating. Why go all R-rated on covers? Just because it sells? Fifty Shades of Grey is not suitable for anyone below the age of 21, and it still has a decent, intriguing cover. You can keep a romance book’s cover clean and family friendly and still represent it thematically. A cover is supposed to hook the reader – I believe one should try to keep it thematic yet a bit intriguing instead of just exposing a raunchy scene to the readers and just give away what the book is about. Keep an air of mystery surrounding it – choose a cover that has a deeper meaning and resonates with its beholder.

In the ideal world, of course, you could choose a cover with a melon on it and your book would still be a bestseller. If you hold that opinion, then no one’s judging you. We are nothing without our own principles.

Emily stepped back from him and shook her head. “Oh, you know damn well what I mean. You know what, Derek? I’m done having this conversation with you. I’m so done with this conversation and I’m so done with you,” Emily spat out angrily before brushing past him.

“Emily, wait,” Derek said, catching her by her arm. “Where are you going?”

Emily spun around and gave him a bitter look before looking down at his hand gripping her arm. “Leave my arm,” she said in a low yet threatening voice, “And why do you care where I’m going? It’s none of your business.”

Derek didn’t leave her arm in spite of her warning and said, “Em, you’ve had too many drinks. You can’t drive in this condition. I’ll drop you home.”

Emily jerked her arm free from his grasp and replied in a bitter voice, “Thank you, but no. I’m perfectly capable of getting myself home on my own. I don’t need you to drop me home. Do you get it, Derek Thorpe? I DON’T NEED YOU!” Emily yelled the last words, causing a few people to look their way.

About the Author

Veronica Thatcher is an exciting new contemporary romance author. Ever since she was very young, she’s dreamed of becoming a doctor when she grew up. While still forging ahead with that, majoring in pre-med in college, she unwittingly stumbled upon a new dream—becoming a published author. Some may call her an introvert or a wallflower, but she has always found she could express herself better in written, rather than spoken, words. However, never in her wildest dreams had she envisioned she would pursue writing as a prospective career, not just a hobby. Her love for writing goes hand-in-hand with her love for a good romance novel—whether it be a feel-good, sweet romance or a dark, suspenseful one. When she’s not studying, reading, or writing, she is usually found blasting her favourite songs, sometimes singing and dancing along to them.  She dabbles in a number of activities, including painting, karate, singing and dancing. She is a huge chocoholic – probably the biggest – and she is an ice-cream junkie too. She considers herself technologically handicapped forever and has no shame in admitting that. She also deems chocolates her boyfriend, Patrick Dempsey the love of her life, and Friends her life!

Her first book, A Way Back Into Love, is slated for release in February 2017, and she hopes readers will enjoy it as much as she enjoyed writing it. You can reach Veronica through Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Wattpad and Gmail.

Book Review: The Princess of a Whore House by Mayank Sharma

Title: The Princess of a Whore House
Author: Mayank Sharma
Publisher: Notion Press

Review

This slender but nimble fiction is a well-meaning story of a girl trying to make it in the mainstream society. Though chased by the shadows of her melancholy life, Aparajita is destined to rise above her hardscrabble life to pursue the dream that her dead father cherished for her.
The story starts with Aparajita trying to get into one of the most reputed schools in Delhi. This tiny event brings forth Ramya’s past. We get to know how, after Ramya’s husband died in an unfortunate incident, she had nobody in the whole wide world to turn to. The only person, on whom she had pinned all her hopes, cheated her of her trust and dignity. Eventually, she ended up in a brothel along with her daughter. Even though reduced to the worst possible fate, Ramya had only one dream — to give her daughter a quality life. Her ardent prayers were answered when she met Raj, a man who is at the opposite spectrum of Anjum. As such, two men define the fate of a woman and the destiny of a girl.
Sharma sets the stage for a collision of events and characters that are already connected. Just what this collision will bring forth makes up the heart of the book, which also explores the choices that people make in life and their opportunities to overcome circumstances. The story also mildly touches upon the stigma and the conditions that exist for sex workers in our country.
Written in the first person, the narrative swings between the perspectives of Ramya and Aparajita. This switch in point of view is a bone of contention for it leaves the readers flailing for a sense of time and place. The story’s grammar is less assured though, and the dialogue can sometimes feel forced. Nevertheless, once readers get caught up in the tale itself, they’ll likely enjoy the ride.
The story gets its lasting power from the qualities of its main characters’ personalities — people who may find themselves caught up in dire conditions but who ultimately find ways to look for light at the end of the tunnel.
